Advent Evening Prayer

Here is an outline for a very gentle prayer time lasting about 30 minutes.

Create a quiet space with chairs placed in a circle if possible.  Place an empty crib or manger in the centre filled with hay or covered with a piece of cloth. Place candles in suitable places. Dim the lights, but make sure people can read. Play gentle instrumental music as people gather such as the first few tracks of Marty Haugen and Marc Anderson’s CD ‘One Bright Star’, Margaret Rizza’s instrumental CD ‘Inpoured Spirit’, suitable classical music, or suitable tracks from one of the Taizé  Instrumental CDs.  The songs listed can of course be found in other hymn books than those in brackets or you may wish to choose your own.

Welcome

Song: Longing for light (Christ, be our light) (Laudate)

Canticle: The Song of Mary

Song: Magnificat (Canon) (Songs from Taizé)

Reading: James 5.7-8

Song: Wait for the Lord (Songs from Taizé)

Time for Quiet Reflection

Prayers of Intercession

Let us offer prayers to God, our heavenly Father.

You sent your Son Jesus to live among us and bring good news to the oppressed.
We pray for the homeless and for refugees and asylum seekers.  We think of those caught up in the violence of war. We pray that barriers of fear, race and difference may be broken down, and that we can welcome strangers into our hearts and lives and be found ready to provide shelter and places of safety.  We pray that a spirit of justice and peace might rule in the hearts of all people.

We look to the coming of your kingdom,
and to peace on earth.

You sent your Son Jesus to heal the broken-hearted.
We pray for people in broken relationships, for single parents and for orphaned children.  We pray for the lonely and the lost, and for those who feel abandoned and let down by society. May we bring comfort and support to those in need and find a better and more compassionate way of caring for each other.

We look to the coming of your kingdom,
and to peace on earth.

You sent your Son Jesus to free the prisoner.
We pray for all who suffer from any kind of addiction or dependency.  May they find appropriate means of support to help them overcome their illness and know that they are not alone. Help us to be a people who do not judge, but who reach out to those in need.

We look to the coming of your kingdom,
and to peace on earth.

You sent your Son Jesus to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.
We pray for grace to give and receive forgiveness for past wrongs.  We pray for peace in your world and a fairer means of sharing the earth’s bounty. May this Advent be a time of new beginnings when debts are cancelled, relationships healed and love is seen in action.

We look to the coming of your kingdom,
and to peace on earth.

You sent your Son Jesus to comfort all who mourn.
We pray for all who are bereaved.  We pray that we may learn how to listen attentively and to find gentle ways of helping them in their sorrow.  We pray for the unemployed and those suffering any kind of loss.  May we reassure them of their worth and offer them support in whatever way is right.

We look to the coming of your kingdom,
and to peace on earth. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Song: People, look East (Hymns of Glory, Songs of Praise)

Small Advent candles might be given to people to take and light at home, or each person might be given a small golden star to keep in their pocket leading them on their journey through Advent towards Christmas.
