Valentine's Day Evening Prayer

Valentine’s Day can be a time of joy and celebration and love.  It can also be a difficult time for people who do not have a loved one to share the day with. Here is an outline for a very gentle prayer time lasting about 30 minutes. You can download a St Valentine’s Day Service poster in Posters.

Create a quiet space with chairs placed in a semi-circle if possible around a focus. This might be a cross – a sign of God’s love for us – or a large candle on a stand surrounded by flowers.  Dim the lights, but make sure people can read. Play gentle instrumental music as people gather. Place a basket of nightlights in front of a tray covered in tin foil, and a basket of Fair Trade chocolate hearts. The songs listed can of course be found in other hymn books than those in brackets or you may wish to choose your own.

We are gathered here this evening to celebrate St Valentine’s Day and to offer our prayers and praise to God, who is love. We give thanks for the love shown to us by our families and friends. We remember, too, those we have loved but who are no longer with us.

The Peace

God is love
and those who live in love live in God
and God lives in them.

The peace of the Lord be always with you
and also with you.

We share a sign of peace with each other.

Prayers of Intercession

God of faith...
You believe and trust in us even when our faith falters. Shape us, mould us and fill us so that we reflect your image in our lives.

Lord, in your infinite mercy,
hear our prayer.

God of hope...
You patiently wait for us and watch as we sometimes get things right, but often get things wrong.  Help us to be a people who never lose hope of how your kingdom might be, and who continue to strive for all that is good and makes for peace.

Lord, in your infinite mercy,
hear our prayer.

God of love...
You speak to us all the time, in the beauty of the world you have created, in the kindness of strangers, in the love of those around us. May we recognise that love as your greatest gift, and cherish it today, tomorrow and always.

Lord, in your infinite mercy,
hear our prayer.

God of faith, hope and love...
We pray for those who feel alone, hopeless and unloved this night. Help us to reach out to those in need in our community. May they, through us, know your presence with them.

Lord, in your infinite mercy,
hear our prayer. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Song: Let there be love shared among us (HON One Church One Faith One Lord)

May the blessing of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
surround us this night and in the days to come,
filling us with the gifts of faith, hope and love.

If possible have refreshments at the end which might include heart-shaped biscuits.
Small Fair Trade chocolate hearts might be given to people to take home if they have not already been picked up during the service.
