Journeying Liturgy

Marking the Journey

Here are resources for a service themed on ‘journeying’. At the front of the church make the foundation of a cairn using about six large clean stones.  You will need smaller clean stones – one stone for each person – small enough to be held but large enough to place on the cairn.

Song suggestions are listed at the end.

The Gathering

Everyone is given a small stone as they arrive.

Welcome and Opening Responses

We meet together on this holy ground.
We are pilgrims on a journey.

God knows each one of us by name.
We are chosen and precious in his sight.

We are invited to follow God’s way.
Let us put our trust in him.

God calls us to be living stones.
We will build God’s kingdom together.

Bible Reading
Adapted from Isaiah 43

Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.
For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour.
You are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you.
Do not fear, for I am with you.

Talk

Today we are looking at ‘journeying’.  Our whole life is a journey – from the moment we are born, through death and beyond.  At different times during our life good things and bad things happen and many of these remain in our memory as markers.  Our faith journey also has its fruitful times and its barren times.Sometimes God feels close.  Sometimes God feels far away.  In the Bible God repeatedly says, ‘Do not be afraid – follow me’.  God longs for us to say, ‘We are not frightened. We will follow you – show us the way.’

Have you ever seen a cairn?  A cairn is a pile of stones built as a marker, or a sign – sometimes on the summit of a hill, or to celebrate a holy place.  The stones have been put there by pilgrims – or travellers – to let people know that they, too, have passed by that same spot on their journey.

As well as signs of our journey, God wants us to be ‘living’ stones, building a kingdom of love and peace.

We have each been given a stone and we are going to build a cairn. This cairn will celebrate our meeting as God’s living stones on this holy ground today – part of our journey together in God’s company – and our intention to be God’s living stones in the world.

Prayers of the People

Lord, we thank you for this day. As pilgrims on a journey our paths have crossed in this place made holy by your presence. We pray that we continue to know you beside as we leave this place and journey on.

Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.

Lord, we pray that, as we strive to be your living stones, we may become signs of your kingdom and bearers of your love to all whom we meet.

Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.

Lord, when times are difficult and the way ahead is unclear may your words of comfort and encouragement be the signs that we need.

Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.

Lord, when our faith falters and doubts overwhelm us, help us to recognise your presence in the travelling companions at our side.

Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.

Lord, give us the strength and the courage to be signs for those who have lost their way.

Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.

Lord, we give thanks for signs of the saints who have gone before, and in whose footprints we tread.

Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer.

The Sending Out

Blessing

May we listen to God the Father who fills us with courage,
may we be led by God the Son into the unknown,
may we bear the fruit of God the Holy Spirit on our journey,
and may God’s blessing be with us today and always.
Amen.
