Continuing Inspiration after Confirmation
This is a very simple idea from St Mary’s Church, Goudhurst, Kent.
After the confirmation service give each candidate a set of 12 sealed coloured envelopes. Written on the front of each envelope is a month of the year, from January to December. The envelopes can be roughly in the colours of the church seasons through the year (see Gallery photo). In each envelope is a suggestion for something the candidate can do that month. Finally, the last envelope is an invitation to share a meal together a year on from the Confirmation day.
Here are 12 ideas from St Mary’s to go in the envelopes. Put each idea on a single card. Obviously there are many more, so be creative and think of some that suit your situation.
A friendship bracelet
Jesus said, ‘Come, follow me.’
You are a follower of Jesus.
Wear the bracelet to remember Jesus is with you.
A small bar of Divine fair-traded chocolate
‘Open your mouth and taste, open your eyes and see how good God is.’
God is good, like this chocolate.
A small packet of sunflower or other flower seeds
Jesus said, ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.’
Something very small can grow into a beautiful flower.
Sow these seeds somewhere and watch them bloom.
Instructions showing how to make a paper boat
Is there something you are worried about?
Something that’s bringing you down?
Let go, and let God take your worries away.
Take a piece of A4 paper.
Write your worries on the paper.
Using the enclosed instructions, make a boat.
Find some water somewhere and let your boat sail away.
As it does, say this prayer:
I let go of all that burdens me.I give it to you.
Help me to let go and to let you carry my troubles for me.
Giving a present
Jesus is God’s present to us.
Can you give someone a present this week?
A small nightlight on the month of their Birthday
You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body
and knit me together in my mother’s womb.
Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!
Your workmanship is marvelous; how well I know it.
You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb.
You saw me before I was born.
Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed.
Light the candle and remember that God has always loved you.
The offer to buy an iTune download
Music is a gift from God.
Go to iTunes and pick a song.
Email the song title and band/singer to the Vicar, and it will be bought for you so you can enjoy God’s gift of music.
A Sole Prayer
Take a pen and write a prayer on the bottom of your shoes.
Ask God to bless your day, the people you’re going to meet and the things you do.
At the end of the day when you take off your shoes notice how your prayer has rubbed off on all the places you have been.
Heart-shaped post-it notes
God loves you.
Put these hearts all over your room to remind you that God loves you.
Looking at photos of the confirmation
Go to the church website and look at photos of the confirmation service to remind you that God gave you the Holy Spirit that day.
God never forgets us, even if we forget God.
Take a post-it note.
Write on it something you need God to remind you about.
Stick it somewhere you will see it often.
You were confirmed a year ago.
Come for a meal to celebrate with the others in the confirmation group.
