Mothering Sunday Prayers of Intercession

Let us be still, and draw close to the presence of God, as we offer our prayers in faith.

Heavenly Father, we are all children in your family and you have created us to live in harmony. We pray for the Church worldwide that there may be a greater understanding between those of different cultures and traditions. Guide us and direct all our thoughts so that our hearts may be full of trust and acceptance as we grow ever more closely together.

God of compassion,
fill us with your love.

We pray for our cathedral church as she watches over our diocese. May we be mindful of the leadership and example that she sets. We pray for our sister churches that we may increasingly find ways to interact and share fellowship. We pray that together we may bring the good news to all those whose spirits are in need of refreshment.

God of compassion,
fill us with your love.

Today we give special thanks for our mothers and for their love and care so freely given. We remember our grandmothers and our godmothers and all who have fulfilled maternal roles in our lives. May they be blessed with the knowledge that being a mother can bring pain as well as joy and that, as with the mothers of Moses, Samuel and Jesus, there must be a loving and a letting go.

God of compassion,
fill us with your love.

We pray for those among us who suffer in body, mind or spirit. May we reach out to them as you reach out to us. May we care for each other as members of one family. We remember those who have gone before us and who now rest with you in heaven. Bring comfort to those for whom this day brings difficulty and sorrow.

God of compassion,
fill us with your love.

Heavenly Father, you patiently watch over your children offering guidance to those who seek, strength to those who falter, and forgiveness to those who sin. Hear us, gracious Lord, as we offer these prayers to you.
Amen.
