Valentine's Day Biscuits

Oven Temperature 180°C Fan 160°C Gas 4

200g soft butter

140g caster sugar

1 egg yolk

1 tsp vanilla extract or the zest from 2 lemons finely grated

280g plain flour, plus a little extra for rolling

Grease two baking trays. Mix the softened butter and the caster sugar in a large bowl with a wooden spoon, then add the egg yolk and vanilla extract or lemon zest and briefly beat to combine.  Sift the plain flour and stir until the mixture is well combined – you might need to get your hands in at the end to give everything a really good mix and press the dough together.  Roll out very thinly and cut out with heart-shaped cutters. Place on the greased baking trays and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown .

What to do with the biscuits

Serve them with coffee after the service.

Put two in a cellophane bag tied with red ribbon.  Hand them out at the end of the service, one for the recipient to keep and the other for them to give to someone they love at home.

Put one biscuit in a cellophane bag tied with a red ribbon with a label attached saying ‘God loves you’ (see How to Make and Gallery photo). Give one to everyone to take home and give to someone they love.
