Prayer Over The Water

Tune: Finlandia 10 10 10 10 10 10

Here is a metrical version of the Prayer over the Water.  It can be sung in different ways.

The opening responses can be sung as below by President and Choir. If the President is not a cantor, he or she can speak the President’s lines while the Finlandia tune is gently played underneath, and the Choir can sing their lines. This will give an introduction to what follows.

The six line verses can be sung by all, or the Choir can sing the first four lines of each verse and the congregation can sing the parts in bold.

The song might be sung in sections, the responses and first four verses as the baptismal party move to and gather round the font, verses five and six at the font before the baptism, and the last verse walking back to the front of the church.

President       Praise God, who made the earth and all the heavens,
Choir              Who keeps his promise now and always will.

President       Let us give thanks to God our Lord Creator.
Choir              It’s right to give him thanks and glorious praise.

President       All praise to God, whose promise is for ever.
Choir              All praise to God, we stand before you now.

1. Almighty God, we thank you for this water.
It gives us life, it cleanses and renews.
When you created earth and sea and heaven
Upon the deep your Holy Spirit moved.

All praise to God, whose promise is for ever.
All praise to God, we stand before you now.

2. When Israel’s children journeyed out of Egypt
And left their lives of slavery behind.
The waters parted leading them to safety
And perfect freedom in the Promised Land.

All praise to God, whose promise is for ever.
All praise to God, we stand before you now.

3. And in the waters of the River Jordan
Our Saviour Jesus was baptised by John.
The voice of God spoke through the Holy Spirit
Confirming Christ, his own beloved Son:

‘This is my Son, the Chosen One, Beloved,
This is my Son, with whom I am well pleased.’

4. As once again we follow where Christ leads us
From death of sin to risen life anew,
We call to mind our faith and understanding
Declaring all that we believe is true.

All praise to God, whose promise is for ever.
All praise to God, we stand before you now.

5. We thank you, Father, for this cleansing water -
In it we die with Jesus in his death,
By it we share in Jesus’ resurrection,
Through it the Holy Spirit gives us breath.

And now in Jesus’ name we sing a welcome
To those who come to be baptised in faith.

6. Now sanctify this water by your Spirit -
In it their sins shall all be washed away
And in new life, and bearing now your image,
The light of faith will always guide their way.

All praise to God, whose promise is for ever.
All praise to God, we stand before you now.

7. May all your faithful people walk together
And share as one the risen life of Christ,
And give to God, the Father, Son and Spirit,
All honour, glory, now and ever more.

All praise to God, the Father, Son and Spirit.
All praise to God, now and for ever more.
Amen.
