Harvest of Spectacles
The people of Leatherhead, Fetcham and Bookham in Surrey came together for a different kind of harvest in 2013 - handing in old specs to fund vision centres in Africa. Over 600 used pairs of glasses were handed in to collection points around the town and surrounding area, including local churches, opticians and workplaces.
The glasses will be recycled by Vision Aid Overseas www.visionaidoverseas.org to fund work fighting poverty by improving access to eye care in eight African countries.
This is a simple idea that had an excellent outcome. So many people have old glasses sitting in the back of drawers and cupboards that they never use. By donating the glasses they radically change other people’s lives, with no cost to themselves. There is a poster in the Resources section to help with the advertising.
