Decorating Candles for Specific Situations

Sometimes events occur in the world which need to be held at the centre of worship, such as terrorist attacks, wars or natural disasters. Lighting a candle so that the Christ Light can shine on a dark situation can be a helpful symbol.  The candle can be placed on the altar and suitable words such as ‘We light this candle to shine the Christ Light into the darkness of N’ can be said as the candle is lit. The lit candle can be left on the altar throughout the service, and re-lit for however long the situation lasts each time a service is held (see Gallery photo).  (The candle shown in the Gallery has the names of the two bishops and the priest who have been kidnapped in Syria written on it.  It has been placed on the altar and lit every Sunday since they were kidnapped.)
