Things to carry in Lent
Carrying something in a pocket can be a physical and continual reminder. During Lent we can choose something to carry which might help us focus on the journey to Holy Week. As we feel the item and are aware of its presence it can also help to bring us closer to God and remind us that God is there with us at all times.
On the first Sunday of Lent place a basket somewhere in church. Put a selection of the following items in the basket – small wooden crosses or ‘holding crosses’, small nails, or small stones. Encourage people to choose items to put in their pockets and keep during the 40 days of Lent (see Gallery photos).
At the end of Lent the items can be placed back in the basket to mark the ending of Lent. If a nail has been carried it can be placed at the foot of the cross on Good Friday, or it can be hammered into the cross as a way of acknowledging our responsibility for the sin of the world - but also as a symbol of God’s love and forgiveness.
