Christmas Day Talk

Before the service:

You will need a beautiful candle, a dove tree decoration, a helium gas-filled Happy Birthday balloon and a box of red foil-wrapped chocolate hearts - enough for each person who comes to the service (look on the internet for a supplier of fairly traded chocolate hearts). Place these four items in boxes and wrap in Christmas paper. (The balloon will need to be weighted down in the box so that it doesn’t rise up to the roof when the box is opened!) Hide the four boxes in the church where they can be found quite easily by children. You also need a small table at the front.

Gifts from Jesus

Invite four children to come forward and help. Talk about Jesus coming at Christmas and that he brings gifts to each one of us. Explain that there are four parcels hidden in the church... gifts from Jesus.

Send the children off to search for the first parcel – point them in the right direction. The first parcel is found and unwrapped – inside is a beautiful candle – ask a child to light it from the Christmas candle – Jesus brings light to the world – set it on the small table.

Send the children off to search for the second parcel – point them in the right direction. The second parcel is found and unwrapped – inside is a flying dove decoration – hold it up for all to see – what does a dove signify? – Holy Spirit, peace - Jesus brings peace to the world – set it on the table.

Send the children off to search for the third parcel – point them in the right direction. The third parcel is very big – the children find it and unwrap it carefully – inside a gas filled balloon pops out (tethered with a weight) – Happy Birthday Jesus! The balloon is filled with air – energy – Jesus brings us life. Tie the balloon to the table.

Send the children off to search for the fourth parcel – point them in the right direction. The fourth parcel is found and unwrapped – inside are red foil-wrapped chocolate hearts (enough for everyone in the church) – Jesus brings us love.

Ask all the people to come forward and receive a chocolate heart – a gift from Jesus.
